Sri
Mahalingeshwara Swamy Temple” is located at Hejamadi village in Udupi district.
The temple houses beautiful idol of Lord Shiva. The main deity of the temple,
Lord Shiva is known by the name “Sri Mahalingeshwara Swamy”.
The
history of the temple is dated back to around 1000 years. It is said that
Kaarasura, a devotee of Lord Shiva has consecrated the idol of Lord Sri
Mahalingeshwara. The temple houses Lord “Sri Mahalingeshwara” as the only deity
in its premises and does not have idols of Nandi and Ganesha in the temple
yard, forms the distinct feature of the temple. Hence, it is compared
equivalent to the one in Kaashi. Sri Mahalingeshwara Temple belongs to “Sri
Puttige Mutt”, is one among the eight Mutt’s (Ashta Mutt’s) of Udupi.
A
car festival is held in Phalguna masa with the congregation of a large number
of devotees.
“Pradosha Pooja” is held on every Dwadashi and “Karthika Deepotsava” and “Annual Festival” are celebrated with pomp and glory.
