Every year on May 11 we celebrate
National Technology Day. On this day in 1998, India successfully tested
Shakti-I nuclear missile in the Indian Army's Test range in Pokhran, Rajasthan.
The day acts as a reminder of the country's technological advancements.
National Technology also marks the flight of Hansa-3, first indigenous aircraft
of India. It was developed by National aerospace laboratories.
History
On May 11, 1998, India
successfully ejected operated Shakti missile at Indian Army's Pokran Test range
in Rajasthan. Led by late aerospace engineer and President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam,
it was first among five nuclear tests in Pokhran. Later, the then Prime
Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared India a nuclear state and it
became sixth country to join nuclear club of nations. Thus, this day is
celebrated as National technology day since 1999.
Significance
National Technology Day is
celebrated to highlight the achievements of our engineers and scientists in the
field of technology and science. After immense breakthroughs by scientists and
engineers and technicians in India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced May 11 as

for National Technology Day every year as a symbol of creativity and scientific
inquiry. Apart from missile tests,
Defense Research and Development Organization also conducted the last test-fire

This day is celebrated by presenting awards to noteworthy individuals and businesses for their contribution in the field of technology and science. Several events are organised by the Ministry of Science and Technology. Scriptwriting, speech and essay competitions are organised in schools. Theme based articles are promoted by the department of science and technology. But, this year due to lockdown imposed to prevent the spread of coronavirus, no such events or competition will take place.
