Gajendragad, Gad means Fort, local
people generally call as Gada. It is about 54 km from Gadag and is one of the
big town in the Gadag District. Gajendragad is a pilgrimage destination, due to
its Kalakaleshwara temple. Gajendragad is famous for beautiful very long hill
strip, historical fort, kalakaleshwara temple, market for javali / dress materials
for marriage and festivals, handloom, Gajendragad Kubusa Kana (blouse piece).
Sri Kalakaleswara Temple
Kalakaleswaragudi is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in a rock hill. The temple is about 4km from Gajendragad off Gajendragad-Nargund Road. The temple is a popular pilgrim center in Dharwad and Gadag districts.
Other attractions
The climb from the base of the hill to the temple is about 200 steps. About three-fourth way uphill, two 20 feet tall deepastambas stand. Unique feature of this temple is a waterfall. Water from a natural spring dives down from about 80 feet. Several plants have grown out of the gaps in the rocks. The hill range starts near Munvalli and passes through Saundatti, Nargund, Gajendragad and beyond. Gajendragad Fort was built by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
