Koragajja is considered one of the
most sacred and sought after spirit in Mangalore. He is believed to be powerful
and widely worshiped in the Tulunadu region. He is called by several other
names as we proceed from south towards north. But in Mangalore he is popularly
called Swami Koragajja.
Offerings for Koragajja
When people are in grave
difficulty or have lost something or some work needs to be successful, they
pray to Swami and promise an offering when the wish is satisfied. The usual
offerings are country wine (alcohol), betel nut (Beeda), chakkuli (a snack also
called murukku in other parts of India). These offerings are considered
favourite of Koragajja. There are many instances where people have prayed to
Koragajja and their prayers have been answered and this has made people to
increase belief in Him as his existence makes people feel safe and happy. There
are people who offer Kola or Utsav (a
cultural and traditional extravaganza to please the spirit for his blessings)
as offering and is done annually during April-May for well-being of the
community.
There are many such spirits which
protect the people of Mangalore, but He has owned a special place in the hearts
of Mangaloreans, and there is no doubt he is famous in and around Mangalore.
Several shrines dedicated to Him are found in and around Mangalore like those at Jaregekatte, Padavangadi, Ullal and Urwa.
