Kalki Jayanti is observed as the
birth anniversary of Kalki, the tenth and last incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The name
‘Kalki’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Kalka’. The name ‘Kalki’ represents
the one who eliminates filth and dirt from the universe. It is believed that
Lord Vishnu will appear in the form of Lord Kalki to remove the evil forces
from the universe and bring back peace. Kalki Jayanti is celebrated in the holy
month of Shravana on the sixth day of Shukla Paksha fortnight.
According to Garuda Purana, Kalki is the tenth avatar of Lord Vishnu. Devotees worship Lord Vishnu on Kalki Jayanti and observe fast. The description of Kalki is inconsistent among the Puranic texts. In Vaishnava texts, Kalki is said to appear on a white horse, while in some texts he is said to be an invisible force destroying evils and chaos.
