Shravana Shanivara

Shravana masa is one of the holiest months in Hindu calendar. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu as well as Shiva and is also the first month in Chaturmas – four holy months.  Equally important is Saturdays or Shanivara (Saturday) in the month of Shravana. Shravana Shanivara is chosen by many devout Hindus to seek the blessings of Lord Lord Venkataramana and Lord Shani.

Importance

Special Poojas and rituals dedicated to Lord Venkataramana as well as Lord Shani are performed on the Saturdays of the month. The entire month is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Shiva and it is believed that Shiva has the capacity to lessen the harmful effects caused by Lord Shani in one’s life

Shravana Shanivara is also known as Sampat Shanivara, as it is widely believed that Lord Shani showers blessings on devotees especially that of prosperity and wealth.

Lord as a model

On all Saturdays of Shravana masa, a huge number of Vishnu devotees worship Lord Venkataramana with great devotion, go to Tirupathi and visit Lord Venkataramana, Mahavishnu, Narasimha, Ranghanatha, Venugopala Swamy and Ram temples everywhere. There are customs where in people take early morning bath, worship the Lord and go to nearby houses to beg for food in the name of Lord Venkataramana.  It is highly believed that this way of begging at others houses removes their ego in the path of accepting humbleness and Lord will be pleased with their attitude as Lord Himself borrowed money from Kubera during wedding with Godess Mahalakshmi, the storey narrates.

People prepares Sweet Pongal (using Rice and Jaggery) as ‘naivedya’ which is a traditional dish and keep in front of Lord as his food to please Him.  It is to be noted that sugar is not used in the dish. Later devotees chant ‘Vishnu Sahasranama’.
