Significance and Rituals

Yama Dwitiya is a Hindu festival celebrated on the Dwitiya Tithi during Kartika month. Mostly, Yama Dwitiya falls two days after Diwali Puja. Hindus worship Lord Yama, the lord of death, on Yama Dwitiya along with Chitragupta and Yama-Dootas, the subordinates of Lord Lord Yama. Apart from Yama Dwitiya, people also celebrate Bhai Dooj on the Dwitiya Tithi during Kartika month.

As per Hindu legends associated with Yama Dwitiya, Goddess Yamuna fed her brother Lord Yama on Kartika Dwitiya at her own home. Since that day, the second day of Kartika month us celebrated as Yama Dwitiya.

As per Hindu tradition, sisters who feed their brothers on the auspicious day of Yama Dwitiya would be forever Saubhagyavati and eating at sisters home bestows long life to brothers. Hence, on the occasion of Bhai Dooj, sisters cook sumptuous food for their brothers and feed them with their own hands.
