Madhvacharya who came here in the 13th century A.D. called the place ujjabhuti (ujerya in Tulu). Temple Historians believe that it was built before the 12th century. Another evidence of the ancientity of the temple is that the ancient writing of The Bronze Prabhavali at the bottom of the original image of Lord Narasimha swamy gives the writing vasudeva kadamba dedicated to Vishnu in Ujire on the first day of Capricorn Samvata on the adityavara of the Sharwari nama samvatsara. The famous historian Dr. P. Gururaja Bhatt admired this temple as an earlier temple than Madhvacharya. There is reference to Madhvacharya having discussed philosophical thoughts with scholars in Ujire and wrote a book on karma resolution.
